I'm in the market for 108-2 or -3. I'm particularly interested in a O-470 or O-540 conversion. The plane doesn't necessarily have to be flying but does need to be complete and have all appropriate paperwork. The price needs to be under $20K and depends on condition. I can be contacted at kurt_smith@hp.com, (208) 396-4113 phone, or (208) 396-6731 fax.

Also, I just joined the SWSC and noticed in the membership roster that there are some Stinsons out there with an O-540 engine. I wasn't aware of an STC for this engine. I would really appreciate any info on this conversion, and how well it works, what the drawbacks are, etc.

Thanks!

During the early '50s Air Cooled Motors was owned by Preston Tucker, of Tucker Automobile Co. He bought the company to put the Franklin engine in the Tucker car, of which only 51 cars were built, each hand-made. A few of the air-cooled engines were prepared for prototype, but never tried. He settled on using the Franklin 335 cu.in. 178 HP helicopter engine, rear mounted. The cylinders were removed, and a special aluminum cylinder-head, holding three cylinder liners for water cooling, was designed. (There was even an early prototype using oil cooling in the jacket, but it required too much oil pressure to maintain and starting the engine was a power drain.) He got 166 HP @ 3000 RPM out of it, and vehicle speed was tested to 120 mph. The radiator was slung above the deck lid like an old Porsche. It was fed air from grills in the rounded rear fenders facing forward. A large starter gear was attached to the rotor hub in a bell housing for the transaxle. It used an old '30 "Cord" transaxle, then attached an electric solenoid to the shifter linkage and voila! automatic transmission. The intake manifolds were cast with the name "Tucker" in the metal. The carburetor was mounted above the engine, over the block cover. Only one distributor was used, with top plugs only. But the engine is unmistakably Franklin, and shows it's aircraft design in the block, accessories, oil pan, pump, and gallery. Many engine components were the same. The piston was modified to add a lower ring set to "stabilize" the rocking motion, and used the higher compression helicopter piston.

I got to see these works of art this week in a dirty old barn in Port Lavaca, TX, where the owner of two Tuckers had salvaged five intact engines and one in pieces enough to make a whole (none of which he would even think of considering to sell). One of his cars is in a museum east of San Antonio, so it seemed natural to ask him to bring it to our Stinson Homecoming on April 30, May 1,2,3,4 in San Antonio in 1997. He agreed! Franklin afficionados will get a real treat with this sight.

I just found your web page, It's great! I recently just purchased a 1946 Stinson 108 serial number 215, with a 150 hp Franklin. The plane has set for ten years with out being flown or the engine started. I am in the process of restoring the plane now (the plane is total disassembled). This plane was metalized in 1964 and the engine has 320 hours smoh. Since the plane has set for so long what kind of problems can I expect upon tearing the engine down? (The engine had new oil in at the time of purchase, engine compression is still good, and the plane set outside. The airframe is in decent shape.)

Also I am looking for the passenger lower door hinge that is attached to the fuselage? Univair does not have this part.

Thanks TDT
